Once Upon a Time in the West

Once Upon a Time in the West

Cobb and Co is the name of a transportation company in Australia.

It was prominent in the late 1800s when it operated stagecoaches to many areas in the outback and at one point in several other countries, as well.

This coach is on display at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch (NZ), even though Cobb & Co themselves did not operate in New Zealand officially, their name was used by many private stage coach operators, among them Charles Cole.

Sitting on a fence that’s a dangerous course
Oh, you could even catch a bullet from the peace-keeping force
Even the hero gets a bullet in the chest
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west

Frozen in Motion

On a recent trip to Christchurch, New Zealand we woke up one morning to find the world covered in snow and ice...

A macro I took last year and has been sitting on my PC ever since. I wished the two flowers would have been positioned a little bit lower, but I could never bring myself to delete this one... even though it has some quite obvious lens flare... so here it goes...

Fields of Gold

Fields of Gold

A field of canola on a farm near Wagga Wagga in New South Wales.

This shot was taken almost straight into the sun, hence the dark black shadows and I had to get rid of some lens flare before I was happy with it.

Waverley Cemetary

Waverley Cemetary

Waverley Cemetery opened in 1877 and is a cemetery located on top of the cliffs at Bronte in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. It is noted for its largely intact Victorian and Edwardian monuments. The cemetery contains the graves of many significant Australians including the poet Henry Lawson.

Regardless of what the EXIF data tells you, this image was NOT taken with a 'Noritsu Koki QSS' but was an old fashioned SLR shot taken with a Canon Rebel 300.

The image was scanned from a regular print, enhanced in Photoshop and got the 'texture' treatment.

The Old Roadmaster

The Old Roadmaster

This old Roadmaster bicycle (two flat tires and copious amounts of rust) was parked against a limestone shed along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. I guess the salty sea spray did it's work here. I used some dodging and burning to make the orange reflector and the green paint on the bike stand out a bit more. I also added a texture layer with a very low opacity which made the rusty colour evident in the wall.

Sugarloaf Lighthouse at Seal Rocks

Sugarloaf Lighthouse at Seal Rocks, New South Wales, Australia.

The Sugarloaf Lighthouse was completed in 1875, ten years after it was first recommended a light be placed to highlight the nearby Seal Rocks. It was originally intended to place the light on Seal Rocks but landing was difficult the proposition was abandoned.

The tower is constructed of brick, rendered and painted white. Also constructed were three adjoining cottages, various outbuildings, the construction of the road from Bungwahl, and a 1500 foot long jetty which was used to land some 1800 tons of building supplies and materials..

The light was upgraded in 1923 and it would be assumed converted from kerosene to acetylene gas. Electricity was introduced in 1966 and the light was kept manned for many years despite automation in 1987.

Even today there is a caretaker on site.

One of Australia's biggest shipping disasters occurred of Sugarloaf Point;- the wreck of the Catterthun in 1895 when bound from Sydney to China with the loss of fifty five lives.
